CLA Undergraduate Internship Grant


PURPOSE:
Internships are great way to enhance your academic experience. The CLA Undergraduate Internship Grant Program is designed to provide some financial assistance to students participating in unpaid internships.

GRANTS AVAILABLE:
After you turn in your application packet, you will automatically be considered for whichever grants you qualify for. Below are the grants/awards that are available:
  • CLA Undergraduate Internship Grant Awards, general: This is the general $1200 internship grant. Several of these are awarded each semester to CLA students doing unpaid internships related to their major.
  • Elden Johnson Award: This $1200 grant is designated for an undergraduate student who is working with public archaeology, museums or American Indian Studies in some way.

If you're awarded one of the $1200 grants, please note that the $1200 grant will be considered part of your financial aid package. If you have questions about this, contact OneStop.


ELIGIBILITY:
To apply, you must meet the following conditions:
  • Be an already-admitted, degree-seeking student in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota
  • Be of sophomore standing or above
  • Have not previously received this grant
  • Be already engaged in an internship, or have already been accepted into an internship position that meets the following conditions:
    • You are completing or will complete a minimum of 120 hours of work at the internship site.
    • You have been assigned a supervisor at your internship site who will verify your work hours and will help ensure that you have a good internship experience.
    • Your work is off-campus and not directly connected to a University department/unit or to a University faculty/staff member.
    • You are not receiving a salary for your internship work. Small "perks" such as occasional lunches, free tickets, parking privileges, etc., do not count as salary. Modest stipends (less than $100 total) do not count as salary either.


DEADLINES:

Fall grant: 4th Wednesday in September
Spring grant: 2nd Wednesday in February
Summer grant: 2nd Wednesday in June

Applications are due by 4:30 p.m. in the CLA Career Services office on the day specified above. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered. This is a one-time, non-renewable grant.


REQUIRED APPLICATION MATERIALS:
A complete application includes the following:
  • Information form (signatures required: applicant, site supervisor)
  • Essay (2 pages)
  • Unofficial copy of your transcript(s)
Use this application form (Word document), and follow the instructions included with it. Submit 6 copies of your completed application. (To get the application instructions in an alternate format, stop by the CLA Career Services office during office hours.)
